Privacy Policy
Open Book is operated by Half Ave Company LLC ("Half Ave", "we", "us"). This policy explains what information the Open Book website collects and what we do with it. The short version: no accounts and no ad trackers. We use Google Analytics to see how the site is used, including what people search for, and it sets cookies to do that.
What we collect
Nothing you have to give us
You can use Open Book without an account, a name or an email address.
Your searches
When you search, your words and filters are sent to our database provider to run the search and return results. We do not store searches in our database or tie them to you. Search words, filters and result counts are also sent to Google Analytics, as described below.
Technical logs
Like any website, the services that host Open Book receive standard request information, such as your IP address, browser type, the time of the request and the address requested. These providers keep this information in short-term logs for security, abuse prevention and troubleshooting.
Email you send us
If you write to us, for example to report an error, we keep your email address and message so we can reply and fix the problem.
Cookies and tracking
Open Book uses Google Analytics to understand how the site is used: which pages are viewed, what people search for and how many results come back, which buildings and tabs are opened, which links are followed (for example to the Attorney General's site), how far pages are scrolled, and how fast pages load. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies to tell visits apart and receives your IP address, browser and device type, approximate location and the page that referred you. We do not send your name or email to Google Analytics, and we do not use it for advertising.
You can block Google Analytics with your browser's privacy settings, a content blocker, or Google's opt-out browser add-on. The site works the same without it. Open Book does not use advertising trackers.
Third parties the site connects to
- Supabase, which hosts the search database.
- Google Analytics, which measures site usage as described above. See Google's privacy policy and how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
- Google Fonts, which serves the typefaces. Your browser requests fonts directly from Google, which receives your IP address. See Google's privacy policy.
- Our web host, which serves the site's pages.
Links to the Attorney General's website, Google Maps Street View and other sites take you to those sites, whose own privacy policies apply.
How we use information
Only to run and secure the Service, fix problems, respond to you, and comply with law. We do not sell or rent personal information, and we do not share it for advertising.
Public records
Open Book displays public filings. Some filings name sponsors, their principals, attorneys and other parties as part of the public record. If you believe something displayed here should not be, write to us and we will review it.
Children
Open Book is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Security and retention
We use reasonable measures to protect information we hold. Emails are kept as long as needed to handle the request. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
Your choices
You can ask us what information we hold about you, or ask us to delete it, by writing to hello@halfave.co.
Changes
We may update this policy. The effective date above shows when it last changed.
